Charles Suckling & Lauretta Snowdon

000922

This photograph was found in the Tavern, about 30 years ago.

I believe it could be the marriage of Lauretta Snowdon and Charles Suckling. This would have been taken about 1902.

If anyone knows where this may have been taken or who any one is please contact me at
eastclevelandhistory@gmail.com

Thank you to Heather for confirming Fredrick and Elizabeth Suckling.

(Sept 08)

The lady front row, second left is definately Elizabeth Suckling (nee Walt), Charles' mother, and the gentleman stood behind her is Fredrick Suckling, Charles' father. The lady front row, second right is Clara Scollett (nee Snowdon), she was widowed the year before this was taken.
The two gentlemen either side could be Charles' brothers, Fred & John.

The rest we are not sure about, possibly the gentleman stood at the back behind Lauretta could be John Snowdon and either Thomas or George Snowdon stood in the doorway.

Simons – Griffiths Wedding - 1936

000437

On Saturday Mr Reg. Simons, tradesman of Lingdale, was married to Miss Elizabeth Griffiths, of Dixon Street, Lingdale at the Trinity Methodist Chapel, Redcar. The Rev. G.H. Marshall officiated, and MR. R. Bell of Redcar was the best man.
Miss Griffiths wore a two piece ensemble in dove gray, with hat and veil. She was given away by her brother, Mr. W. Griffiths of Head Farm, Lingdale. Sister Brockbank of Bolton Hospital, was bridesmaid and wore a navy blue two piece ensemble.
The reception was held in Rushby’s Café near Redcar, after which the bridal couple left for London. Mrs Simons’ travelling dress was a navy blue two piece. The honeymoon is being spent at the Strand Palace Hotel.
Before her marriage Mrs. Simons was a nurse by profession. She undertook her training at Hull, and took her certified Midwives’ Board Certificate at Halifax. Since then she has served at Stockton and Thornaby Hospital, Edinburgh and Norwich. At Norwich she had nine years’ service and was assistant matron. The staff presented her with an eiderdown and a bedspread.
Although born in Wales, her home has been Lingdale since she was 15 months old.
Mr Simons is also a native of Lingdale, His father was the village constable some 40 years ago, when strength was chief item necessary. Instead of following his fathers’ profession, Mr Simons became a tradesman, opening a pork butcher’s shop. He subsequently extended his business and now has interests in the grocery trade, estate agency and insurance.
Mr. and Mrs. Simons are to live at Lingdale.

A Lingdale Catastrophe.

If by chance you visit Lingdale though the sun maybe shining, yet you will see men, haggard of eye, as if weighed down by some great sorrow or crushed by some great catastrophe. Such a catastrophe has happened.
Ten men, united in a common bond have seen their beloved president borne to the “united State”. Ten men wish to convey to their leader’s wife their deepest sympathy for the happenings of the weekend; but such is the bond between the company that ‘tis hoped all will be well.

President may he be, but greater honours are in store for Mr. R. Simons, chief of the Lingdale Ananias Club, when he returns to Lingdale.
On Saturday he was married at Redcar to Miss Elizabeth Griffiths, also of Lingdale, so a member the club stated: but who’s to know it’s true?

Mr. and Mrs Simons are very well known in Lingdale. Mr. Simons has lived here many years, being a grocer and estate agent. Mrs Simons is a nurse by profession and has worked in many well known hospitals. The good wishes of the people are theirs.

To Celebrate Saltburns Golden Wedding                                                                        000845

A very seasonable method of celebrating their golden wedding is being adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cook of 6 Bath Street, Saltburn.
To-morrow will be the 50th anniversary of their marriage which took place at the Guisborough Methodist Chapel in Guisborough, and they are marking the occasion by gifts of 2 c.w.t. of coal each to tennants, about 18 in number, of the house property they own. Mr. and Mrs Cook are both in their 72nd year.
Their fresh look as well as their keen and active interest in affairs belie their age. Mr Cook is a native of Eston. His father moved to Lingdale 61 years ago and opened the post office there in 1873. He held the post for 37 years, and his son assisting him in his work, delivered the letters.
The district included Boosbeck, Lingdale, Stanghow and Moorsholm and over this long round the younger Mr. Cook tramped with letters every day. He succeeded his father as postmaster, and went to live in Saltburn.

Fine Carnations

Mrs. Cook was born at Monkwearmouth Colliery, Sunderland and her parents moved to Boosbeck 58 years ago. Her father Mr Robert Cuthbertson was the manager of Messrs. Stevenson and Jakes' mine in Boosbeck.
Gardening in which he was always interested is Mr. Cook's chief hobby. He is an enthusiastic carnation grower, and some fine freshly cut blooms shown to a "Gazette " reporter who called on him were excellent testimony of his skill. He has won many first prizes for the best kept allotment. Mr. Cook has been a reader of the "Gazette" ever since it's first publication and has never taken any other paper.
