A Document that will interest older folk
The diary of an old Cleveland miner, Mr William ROWBOTTOM of Boosbeck, who died in 1927, has come to light and we publish it below in the hope that it will be of interest to readers, particularly the older generations familiar with life in Cleveland in the days of long before the War.
The Late Mr. Rowbottom's diary is a neatly kept document with the dates in Red and the various items all neatly ruled off. It must have been a labour of love to this old Cleveland Miner whose economy of words in recording incidents is noteworthy. A great deal of the diary, records the deaths of friends, there are no exciting things, but then the life of a miner in a tiny community before the days of buses and pictures etc. was not likely to contain such things. Nevertheless it records the real stuff of life, births, marriages and deaths, which after all are the most important things!
1873
Oct 25th - Station Hotel was opened out at Boosbeck.
1875
Oct 11th - Lingdale Hotel was opened out.
1878
Nov 1st - Boosbeck Station was opened for passengers.
Nov 9th - Guisboro' Fair put off through snowstorm.
1880
Jan 1st - Wm. Armstrong came to South Skelton mines.
May 25th - First demonstration held at Boosbeck, speakers were Mr.A.McDonald, M.P., F. Burt, M.P., Charles Bradlaugh, M.P.
1883
June 16th - Disaster at Sunderland when 186 children perished in the staircase.
1884
Oct 14th - Skelton Church was opened out by Dr. Gardener.
1886
- Stevensons pit stopped working for good.
May 4th - Luke Senior, of Boosbeck died.
1887
March - Stevensons pit stopped. Run all the stone up day after Good Friday.
1888
Dec 14th - Billy Tate fell off his horse at Stanghow, died Dec 16th aged 36.
1889
March 27th - John Bright died.
Sept 28th - George Gardener came to South Skelton mines, Engine man left on May 23rd 1922.
1890
Feb 13th - A.Gray, manager, came to South Skelton Mines.
1892
April 6th - Charlton Wharton, of Skelton Castle died aged 74.
1893
July 5th - John Horsewood of Lingdale died aged 34.
1894
Oct 5th - Miss Wharton born.
July 24th - Second demonstration at Boosbeck, speakers were Mr Sam Wood, M.P., Mr Tom Mann, Rev. J.F.Cox.

June24th - Warrenby boiler explosion at Messrs. Walker, Maynard & Co's Works, Warrenby on Friday at 9.30 p.m. Four people killed and many injured.
1899
July 17th - Sim Tuck took over his father's shop at Boosbeck.
1900
Feb 12th - Mrs. Jackson, wife of David Jackson of Boosbeck, died.
Feb 14th - Snowstorm in Cleveland when Mr. Proctor of Guisborough broke his leg and a girl was killed at Brotton Station.
March 1st - John Thomas Wharton of Skelton Castle died aged 90.
June 29th - Matthew Marley of Rockly House, Boosbeck, died aged 81.
1901
April 16th - Noah House of Skelton, died aged 68.
July 3rd - Third demonstration at Boosbeck, speakers were Mr. H. Broadhurst, M.P., Mr. H. Wilson, ex M.P., and Rev. A.T. Guttery.
Nov 19th - Harriet Kitching, died aged 81. she was the first person to be buried at Boosbeck.
Boosbeck Church was opened out.

Feb 2nd - First wedding at Boosbeck Church.
April 5th - Wm. Jones died at Boosbeck, aged 72.
June 21st - Annie Tate of Skelton died aged 43.
July 10th - Wm. Knights of Margrove Park died aged 38.
Dec 24th - Tragedy at Guisborough, Elizabeth Mary Lynas was murdered.

Jan 7th - John H. Walker, of Charltons Terrace, was killed by a fall off roof at Spawood Mines.
Sept 11th - James Husband of Boosbeck Road, died age 68.
Sept 12th - Hannah Hogben died aged 68.
March 31st - Wm. Benson of Boosbeck, died aged 69.

March 8th - George Oliver's horse fell in a pit fall in Charlton's Wood going to Spawood Cottages about 10 p.m. on Sunday night.

Sept 3rd - Old Charles Taylor died at Margrove Park.

Sept 18th - A.Hayes of Hobdale Terrace was killed at Spawood Mines in the tip shed.
Billy Barr was killed in Park-road, South Skelton Mines.

Jan 12th - Charles Milligan and party were burnt by powder.

Jan 30th - Motor accident on Skelton Moor when two Newtons, father and son of Loftus were killed.
Feb 2nd - Wm. Sanderson of Lingdale died in barbers shop at Loftus aged 71.
Feb 24th - Mrs Wilson of Charltons Terrace was buried at Guisborough aged 86.
March 2nd - Wm. Binns of Charltons Terrace died aged 72.
March 3rd - James Piggins of Boosbeck Road, died age 78.
March 12th - Nicholas Barr of Charltons Terrace died.

March 25th - David Jackson was taken ill at South Skelton pit yard. Died.
May 9th - Skroggins made a visit to Boosbeck. Much respected by all.
May 12th - Alfred Buckle of Charltons buried aged 74.
May 22nd - Mary Featherstone died at Charltons Terrace. Wife of George Featherstone.
May 29th - Jabed Pierce of Boosbeck buried.
June 2nd - Harry Ord of Guisborough bandmaster of Salvation Army, was injured in Spawood Mines.
June 11th - Harry Wood of Margrove Park died aged 69.
June 24th - James Atkinson of Lingdale, late of Charltons died.
July 3rd - South Skelton Mines big chimney was pulled down.
July 6th - Stevenson's big chimney was pulled down.
Aug 8th - John Russell of Boosbeck died aged 85.
Aug 16th - Mrs Lennard died.

March 14th Early on Wednesday morning a disastrous blaze at Saltburn. £3,000 damage done in early morning fire at "Bardenroft" the residence of Mrs I'Anson.

Jan 8th - Harry Tansley of 44, Margrove Park died aged 82.
Jan 19th - Jimmy Branson was taken to Guisborough Union, aged 74.
Jan 21st - South Skelton Mines started working again after headgear put up.
Jan 26th - John Thompson of Fenton Street and Wm. Markham of Albion Street, were injured in a motor smash at Acklam Lane end. They collided with a motor car driven by Mr. W. Ormiston of Stockton, and were taken to North Riding Infirmary.
Jan 27th - Death of Mr. Joseph Toyn at Saltburn, aged 85.
Jan 29th - Joseph Watson of Black Swan was fined 10s. for selling lottery tickets.
Feb 1st - Over 100 got their notices at South Skelton Mines and all men at North Skelton Mines.
Feb 12th - Thomas Gill of High Street, Boosbeck died. Late headmaster of Boosbeck Council School.
Feb 14th - George Tarbit died at 1 Exeter Street, Saltburn. aged 84.
Feb 17th - Wm. Robert Blenkey of Lingdale Died.
Feb 18th - William Smith was shot at Lingdale mines. aged 55.

June 7th - Bob Robinson of North Skelton died.
June 11th - Ness Readman died at 46 Northgate, Guisborough aged 64.

Jan 24th - Wm. Simpson of Hobdale, got knocked down by an engine on the line at Priestcrafts under the bridge.
Jan 25th - Mrs. Kemp of Golden Lion Hotel, Loftus died.

Feb 28th - Rattler Brighton of Eston was buried.

March 2nd - Joseph Barker of Lingdale was taken to the N.R. Infirmary.
March 4th - New block was put in Institute, Boosbeck outside.
March 2nd - At Foxdale farm, Guisborough, Ernest Webster shot himself with a gun and was buried.
March 4th - Walter Simons was injured at South Skelton Mines.
March 7th - Joseph Galverti finished at South Skelton and went to Doncaster.
March 7th - Arther Waller of Boosbeck Road was taken to Guis. Hospital.
March 23rd - At Manor House, Moorsholm, William Jackson hung himself in an outhouse.
March 15th - At the residence of her daughter Mrs. G. Linton of Thurnscore, East, Mary Anne Tansley died.
March 25th - New Workmen's Institute was opened by Squire Wharton and a clock was unveiled by Major Hamilton and dedicated by Rev. A. R. Lee. Lingdale Band sounded the "Last Post" and also played the "Death March" in memory of the 14 men who lost their lives in the war.
March 28th - At North Ormesby Hospital Hillary Rush of 16, Margrove Park died.
