Percy Simons, Rifleman, who was for a number of years very prominent in the work of Lingdale Mission Rooms, as a Sunday School Teacher. It is sad to think that he was not able to live to reap the laurels of his hard won D.C.M. conferred on him for conspicuous bravery upon the field of battle, but a greater reward will be his, the crown of life. He was fatally wounded in an attempt to bring in some of his suffering comrades from No Mans Land.

James Foster 1750 5th Bn Australian Infantry AIF was killed in action at Pozieres - Battle of Somme on 25th July 1916 aged 38 years. He joined AIF on 5th Jan 1915 an saw service in Galipolli. We have a copy of his service record from the Australian Archives. At the time of his enlistment his wife lived at 5 Davison St. but moved to 13 Davison St. a few years later. For info there is a plaque with his name in Boosbeck Church. At no time did he serve in 4th Yorks. Great site. Regards Bob Foster

WALTON, Robert, 10th Green Howards
​
Robert Walton who lived on Freebrough Road. My grandfather served in the 1914/18 war and believe he was an ironstone miner and was a Kitchener Vol.
We think he joined up late 1914 and served with the 10th Green Howards, service no 12459 with C company. The 10th was one of 4 battalions that made up the 62nd Brig 21st Div. At the battle of Loos on Hill 70 and from there to Armentieres where he was wounded on the 26th of January 1916. Was back in the battalion for the Battle of the Somme !st July 1916. The attack was just to the north of the village of Fricourt east of Albert.
Later in 1917 was at Arras, Broodseinde during the Passchendaele campaigne. The battalion was disbanded in Feb1918 and transfered to an East Yorks battalion 27677 and we think may have gone to Palastine to serve out the war.
