This photograph of Margrove School was taken in the school yard and dates to about 1917. The boy on the left of the blackboard , age 11, is Walter Toes, the boy on the right is Walter's brother, George age 12.

The Boys were chosen to point out the request written on the blackboard, to buy War Savings Certificates, as their father George Lewis Toes, had been killed in action at the Battle of the Somme on September 25th 1916.

H.M.Inspectors visit 10th February 1905.

"The boys offices and the urinal ought not to have been permitted to fall into the neglected condition in which they were found specified in the log book.
Two of the closets were quite dark and none can be decently used by the children. The cloak room accommodation is badly arranged and seemingly insufficient".

H.M.Inspectors visit 2nd April 1906

"Additional desks for the accommodation of about 20 children are urgently needed in the infants department, at the present time the bigger half of the babies class have only forms for seating purposes and these have no backs."
"The offices are built in a line only 10 feet distance from the school buildings. The door of the 'Girls' set, immediately face the door, leading into the school room and in the absence of any screen, ordinary privacy and decency cannot be practiced. As a new infant room is at once to be built, this very singular defect should be dealt with at the present time and all the offices be made light enough for the little children to use".
